The Stone of Heaven
In Chinese, jade is known as “Yu”, which means imperial or heaven. In fact the stone was so highly regarded by the Chinese that the characters for emperor and jade is only one tiny stroke apart!
Emperor (wáng): 王 Jade (yù) : 玉
“Gold is valuable but jade is priceless."
- Chinese Proverb
Jade is valued by the Chinese for these qualities: benevolence (lustre), honesty (brilliance and translucency), integrity (toughness), and wisdom (tranquil resonance).
While China is one the largest jade producers, this precious stone can also be found in many parts of the world: New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Zimbabwe, Russia, Taiwan, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Burma, Alaska, and Poland. Jade is loosely coined for many types of gemstones but pure forms of jade are jadeite and nephrite. Jade is not always green, it comes in lavender, orange, brown, white, gray, yellow, and red. They also come in many different shapes, sizes, and levels of translucency. Diamonds are forever but jade is for eternity. The finest jadeite specimens are one of the most expensive gems, fetching heart-stopping prices at auctions.
Healing Properties of Jade
The name “jade” came from Spanish “piedra de ijada” when the first Spanish explorers saw Central American natives holding jade pieces to their bodies to treat ills and pains.
In the realm of crystal healing, jade is the go-to stone for its powerful metaphysical energy. It helps protect energy and calm spirit. The Chinese often use jade as a talisman to ward off negative energy and promote peace and longevity. Jade is also a cleansing stone, helping to detox and alleviate pain. At the mental-emotional level, it is said to calm disturbances and banish negative thoughts. A symbol of eternity, abundance, and nobility, jade also helps ground and enhance spiritual practices. Prayer beads, incense urns, amulets, and other religious objects were often made of jade.
