5 Tips to Overcome Mask-Related Skin Issues

Prior to Covid-19, single-use masks were worn for a few hours at a time, usually during surgeries. These days wearing one for 8+ hours is de rigueur, especially in healthcare settings. Surgical or medical grade masks are made from non-woven material and just not skin-friendly. Even washable masks can be problematic depending on the material used or improper cleaning. If you (or a loved one) is experiencing mask-related skin issues, we have a few recommendations to keep your skin healthy during this time:
To minimize chaffing and rubbing, apply a skin balm before donning your protective face mask. Reapply every 2-4 hours to keep the skin barrier properly protected. We recommend plant-based over petroleum-based balms. Botanical products offer antioxidant properties and help heal the skin.

2. BE EXTRA GENTLE
This is not the best time to do aggressive exfoliation. Clean your face with a non-stripping cleanser and keep to a gentle skincare routine as you want your skin barrier to stay intact and strong. If you already have acne, use an acne patch instead of drying acne treatments.
3. KEEP IT CLEAN
Make sure your mask is as clean as possible if you chose to wear cotton or washable ones. Alcohol may be used to keep cotton masks clean between washings. Wash in hot water or when possible, sterilize with UV or heat.
4. SKIP MAKEUP

Wearing a mask for hours over concealer, foundation, and powders will increase clogged pores and likely induce breakouts. No one can see what's underneath the mask anyway, best to skip makeup during this time. If you have to, keep it light and fresh, or just focus on your eyes.
5. REPAIR YOUR SKIN
